The Cause

A unique home for Jazz

For over 21 years the Nashville Jazz Workshop has been a place where students of all ages and abilities learn jazz directly from the masters, and where audiences hear jazz in a world class listening room.  Visiting artists who’ve toured all over the country continually tell us how unique the Workshop is.

Jazz fosters creativity and expression in students of all ages, and feeds the spirit of listeners. Through online classes and streaming performances, NJW now takes great jazz to the world.

In the pandemic, the sounds survived

In the Spring of 2020 the COVID lockdown forced a suspension of in-person classes and performances. The Nashville Jazz Workshop responded with online classes and streaming performances, allowing  students and audiences to keep learning and listening, and opening these experiences to people all over the world. These online experiences will continue side by side with the return to in-person activities.

Supporting working artists

Music City is a treasure trove of great musicians who are also superb jazz artists. The Nashville Jazz Workshop provides opportunities for these artists – over 20 years the Workshop has paid well over $2 million  for working artists to teach and perform.

Contributions and income from streaming support NJW’s Artist Fund, which exists to put more musicians to work and pay them.

Reaching out to the community

Special programs go outside NJW’s walls to bring jazz to the community. The acclaimed  Jazz on the Move program is in its 15th year, with combining an educational experience and a great jazz performance in a community setting for all ages

Engaging the community

Jazz AM, introduces young children to delights of jazz through improvisation, song, and movement.

NJW joined the community celebration of Juneteenth with art and music, joining with Vanderbilt’s Curb Center to host a community art project with noted mural artist Omari Booker, and performances of Brassville.

Students, faculty, and alumni sound off

“It’s been a great extra thing for my career as a songwriter and producer . . . cross training is what I call it.”

Byron Hill

Music Row songwriter and producer, on his vocal jazz studies at NJW

Jazz Lives Here Too

Operating for many years tucked away in Germantown’s Neuhoff Complex, the Nashville Jazz Workshop has a new home in the heart of the Buchanan Arts District in North Nashville. The beautiful facility welcomes the community and – through the miracle of modern technology – the world. NJW’s teaching artists and performers include some of Nashville’s finest musicians, living proof that jazz is a foundation for almost any kind of music, and that in Music City,  Jazz Lives Here Too!
